ATM locations and hours come from each bank's Naver Place listing, checked 9 October 2026. Card-network acceptance comes from Mastercard's ATM locator and UnionPay International. Fees are typical figures, not bank fee schedules. Method notes are at the end of the article.

Quick answer (checked 9 October 2026): The ATMs in Sokcho to try with a foreign card are on Jungang-ro, beside the Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. Shinhan, KB Kookmin and Woori ATM corners are 2–3 minutes from the market and open daily 07:00–23:30; NH Bank's ATM next door is on Mastercard's ATM locator. On screen, choose the foreign card or English menu, and if the ATM offers to convert the amount into your home currency, decline and stay in won.

When we helped passengers at the Sokcho cruise terminal on a 2026 call day, the question we heard first and most often was: where is an ATM that works with my card? Eight of the nine ATMs below are within a 6-minute walk of the market, and all but one are on or just off Jungang-ro (중앙로), the road between the market and the cruise port.

Every ATM below is on the walking map under the ATM layer.

Do you need cash in Sokcho on a cruise day?

Probably less than you think. Foreign Visa and Mastercard cards work at shops, restaurants and cafes, at most Sokcho taxis, and at the chains passengers ask about: Olive Young, Daiso and E-mart (see our Sokcho shopping guide).

Cash still helps at:

  • a few older stalls in the Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market (속초관광수산시장)
  • small street-food counters

You will not need small notes for tips: Korea has no tipping culture. For a day ashore, ₩30,000–50,000 covers the odd stall. Take it out in one withdrawal rather than several: each one carries its own fee.

Names link to each Naver Place listing; ATM hours are the ATM corners' own hours there, checked 9 October 2026. "Not checked" means no card-network listing confirmed it, not that it fails. Walking times are estimated from the map.

The bank branches themselves keep weekday hours, roughly 09:00–16:00, and close on weekends and public holidays. The ATM corners stay open, which matters on a Saturday or Sunday call.

Pro tip

If one ATM rejects your card, walk to the next. Shinhan, KB, Woori and NH are within about 150 metres of each other on Jungang-ro (our map estimate), and a card refused at one bank's machine can work at another's.

On the way from the cruise terminal

Naver lists no bank ATM inside the Sokcho cruise terminal (속초항 국제크루즈터미널). Walking toward the market, the first ATM you reach is Shinhyup 365 at 184-3 Jungang-ro, about 7 minutes from the gate and open from 05:00 to midnight. The post office, Woori and NH come next, then KB and Shinhan right by the market.

Near E-mart in Cheongho-dong (청호동)

If you are shopping across town, E-mart Sokcho (이마트 속초점) has Shinhan and Woori ATMs on the ground floor, listed 09:00–23:00. E-mart closes on the second and fourth Sundays of the month (per Naver Place, 9 October 2026).

Which foreign cards work at Korean ATMs?

  • Mastercard, Cirrus and Maestro: look for the logo on the machine. Mastercard's ATM locator, queried on 9 October 2026, lists NH Bank's Jungang-ro ATM and dozens of convenience-store ATMs run by Hyosung and NICE across Sokcho as taking international cards.
  • Visa and Plus: look for the Visa or Plus logo on the machine before you insert the card.
  • UnionPay: UnionPay International states that every ATM in Korea showing the UnionPay logo accepts its cards.
  • Amex, JCB and Discover: check the logo on the machine, and bring a Visa or Mastercard as backup.

How to withdraw cash with a foreign card, step by step

  1. Insert your card and look for a Foreign Card, Global or English button on the first screen.
  2. Enter your PIN. If it is rejected, try another bank's ATM before you try again; repeated wrong entries can lock the card.
  3. Choose the amount in won.
  4. Check the fee screen. The ATM shows its charge before you confirm. A 2026 Korean ATM guide puts the usual bank "Global ATM" fee at ₩3,600–4,000 per withdrawal (we have not seen bank fee schedules for Sokcho); on ₩50,000 that is 7–8%, on ₩30,000 about 12–13%. Your own bank may add its fee on top.
  5. Decline the conversion. If the screen offers to charge you in your home currency at a quoted rate, say no and stay in KRW. That conversion, called dynamic currency conversion, uses the ATM operator's rate instead of your bank's.

If your card does not work

  • Try a different bank's ATM on Jungang-ro; that is often all it takes.
  • Check with your bank that the card is enabled for overseas ATM use.
  • If every ATM rejects it, pay by card for the rest of the day; little in Sokcho requires cash.
  • In the market, ask: "외국 카드 돼요?" (we-guk ka-deu dwae-yo?), meaning "Do you take foreign cards?" Our Korean pronunciation guide has more phrases like it.

Currency exchange in Sokcho

NH Bank on Jungang-ro and IBK Industrial Bank on Cheonghak-ro list currency exchange at the counter, but only during weekday branch hours, roughly 09:00–16:00. On weekends and public holidays, an ATM is your only option, so arrive with a card that works abroad.

Before you go

  • All ATM pins are on the walking map: turn on the ATM layer.
  • On call days the city has run a free shuttle between the terminal and the market (10:00–18:30 on recent calls, per the city's call-day operations); the ATMs, the market and Olive Young are all a few minutes from its market stop. See the cruise day guide.
  • Most taxis take cards. See Sokcho taxi fares and tips.

How we checked this

ATM names, addresses, coordinates and ATM-corner hours were read from each bank's Naver Place listing on 9 October 2026, a public holiday on which every branch showed closed while the ATM corners stayed open. Network acceptance comes from Mastercard's public ATM locator, queried the same day, and from UnionPay International's own statement. The withdrawal fee range comes from a 2026 Korean ATM guide (CitiesInsider, Suwon edition), not from bank fee schedules. Walking times are straight-line distance × 1.3 at 80 metres per minute.

The post office and the Woori and NH Bank ATMs are 7–8 minutes away, and the main cluster by the market is 9–11 minutes away.

The Korean ATM charges its own fee and shows it on screen before you confirm. A 2026 Korean ATM guide (CitiesInsider, Suwon edition) puts the usual bank Global ATM fee at about ₩3,600–4,000 per withdrawal, which is 7–8% of a ₩50,000 withdrawal. Your own bank may add a foreign transaction fee. Choose to be charged in won (KRW) and decline the ATM's offer to convert the amount into your home currency.

Do I need cash in Sokcho?⌄

Not much. Shops, restaurants, cafes, Olive Young, Daiso, E-mart and most taxis take foreign Visa and Mastercard cards. Cash helps at a few older stalls in the Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market and at small street-food counters. For a day ashore, ₩30,000–50,000 in cash is a sensible amount, taken out in one withdrawal to pay one fee.

Can I exchange money in Sokcho on a weekend?⌄

Not at a bank. NH Bank on Jungang-ro and IBK Industrial Bank on Cheonghak-ro list currency exchange at the counter, but only during weekday branch hours, roughly 09:00–16:00, and both close on weekends and public holidays. On a Saturday or Sunday call, withdraw won from an ATM with a card that works abroad instead.
