The story
The owner inherited the sundae business from an elderly aunt after previously running a pork-belly restaurant for local residents. Years in Abai Village brought memories of its busy lanes after television dramas drew visitors from across Korea. As the village changed and more travelers sought the sea, the restaurant moved near Sokcho Beach. The familiar name stayed so longtime customers could still find it.
What they stand for
The owner keeps Abai sundae and sausage soup at the heart of the menu while experimenting with vegetables and rice grown on their own farm. Ingredients are chosen in person by visiting shops and looking at the produce directly. The aim is fresh food with a colorful presentation, informed by continued study of cooking trends. The owner describes an organic-growing approach; no formal organic certification is claimed.
Behind the signature
Stuffed squid and pork-based Abai sausage share a table with soy-marinated shrimp rice, octopus bibimbap, and mulhoe-naengmyeon. The latter puts cold noodles into mulhoe, a chilled seafood soup, as the owner's own combination. For mulhoe, the owner favors cooked seafood and talks about East Coast octopus and sea snails; the online listing also names spear squid. Ask what seafood is being served that day.
Local tip
Find the restaurant opposite Sokcho Beach's south entrance at 137 Haeoreum-ro. Naver's owner information describes free parking for up to 10 cars through the entrance beside Ediya Coffee. Ask about an available seat with a sea view if you want a slower meal by the coast.
For travelers
The owner says stuffed squid is a frequent choice among international visitors, who also enjoy taking time over a meal near the sea and hearing the story of Abai sundae. Point to the Korean name when ordering. A city-produced English menu exists, but the owner says it is not currently used reliably; use the bilingual dish guide or a translation app to confirm ingredients. Pork-free fillings, vegetarian dishes, and fluent English service need individual confirmation.
