Yeongnangho Cafe Bean
영랑호 카페 빈
A family-run cafe beside Yeongnangho where every sandwich and panini is made only after you order. The family buys fresh vegetables each day, does not reuse ingredients from the previous day, and builds generously filled sandwiches without added flavor enhancers. The cafe began in Joyang-dong in May 2022, then moved to this lakefront location to welcome more walk-in guests. Tourists, lakeside walkers, local regulars, and an unexpected number of international visitors now share the room. The other half of the space is a baby photography studio. The two businesses had already been neighbors on separate floors at the former Joyang-dong location, where they discovered an older connection: the photographer had taken a young family member's first-birthday portraits years before.

The Story
The family once lived and worked in Seoul, including a food-industry job, before a young family member's illness made cleaner air feel urgent. They closed out their Seoul lives together and moved to Sokcho. The cafe opened in May 2022 inside a Joyang-dong apartment complex, where delivery made up much of the business but left little room to grow. At that first location, the cafe and a baby photography studio were neighbors on the first and second floors. After learning that both businesses had come from Seoul, they began talking and discovered a much older connection: the photographer had taken the young family member's first-birthday portraits years earlier. An acquaintance later introduced the current site beside Yeongnangho, bringing a steadier mix of tourists, people exercising around the lake, and local walk-ins. The cafe and photo studio now share this space half-and-half.
What They Stand For
The operating rule is to cook as if the family were eating the food themselves. Nothing is made ahead: every item starts when the order comes in. Vegetables are used generously, added flavor enhancers are avoided, and freshness is the line the family will not cross. Even when prices are high, they visit nearby markets to find the freshest produce available, buy for that day, and do not carry the previous day's ingredients into the next service.
Behind the Signature
The Korean Beef Bulgogi Pocket carries the most personal recipe in the shop. The bulgogi follows a house method, then gains a quiet warmth from the mother's homemade ginger powder. She preserves ginger in honey, dries it, and grinds it herself before it reaches the sandwich. The result folds a Korean family recipe into a pita-style pocket packed with vegetables, cheese, and sauce. The Egg Mayo Pocket is the gentler alternative the family recommends when an international guest wants an immediately familiar place to start.
Local Tip
The cafe sits next to the Yeongnangho canoe venue, with the lake visible from the building. It works naturally before or after a walk or workout around the lake. For the family, Sokcho's appeal is the rare combination of city, mountain, and sea in one place, plus winters that feel milder than Seoul and a shorter stretch of peak summer heat.
Seasonal Note
International travelers often arrive between February and April, when domestic tourism is quieter. That off-season pattern has become surprisingly important to the cafe, so an English menu is useful year-round rather than only during the summer rush.
For Travelers
The old Korean-only menu made ordering difficult for international guests, and a younger family member often stepped in to help with language. The family has also seen how literal translation misses the context behind Korean food — translating mulhoe as only 'raw fish,' for example, does not explain how it differs from ordinary sashimi. This English menu therefore prioritizes clear ingredients, format, size, and temperature instead of word-for-word transliteration alone.
