Jangsu Live Fish

장수활어횟집

A second-floor sashimi house facing Sokcho Beach, with wide windows over the sea and the Sokcho Eye ferris wheel. Jangsu Live Fish has been in the same family story since 1993: eleven years in Daepo, then this beachside location from 2003. The menu is direct and old-school in the best way - live sashimi, mulhoe, seafood stews, red crab ramen, and the owner's unusual kim-chobap, a seaweed-wrapped sushi roll she has carried since the Daepo days.

The Story

The owner started running a seafood restaurant in 1993, first spending eleven years in Daepo. Back then, sourcing meant hard miles: she would drive nine or ten hours herself to bring seafood back from producing areas. In 2003 she moved to the current Sokcho Beach location, renting at first and buying the building two years later. The street in front used to feel rough and makeshift, with old open stalls nearby; today it has become cleaner, brighter, and easier for visitors to walk.

“'You have to do your best for guests - the taste, the ingredients, all of it.'”

— Owner, Jangsu Live Fish

What They Stand For

Her standard is simple: do the best you can for the guest, in taste and in ingredients. The supply chain has changed since the Daepo years - an uncle helps with supply from Shanghai, and fish trucks bring daily deliveries from places like Tongyeong and Namhae - but the owner's answer has not changed. Good fish, honest portions, and food she can stand behind.

Behind the Signature

The kim-chobap is the dish to notice. It is not the kind of menu item every sashimi house carries; the owner has been making it since the Daepo period and still calls it the dish she feels most confident about. The mulhoe is the crowd-pleaser regular guests praise, while the red crab ramen has become the easiest bridge for foreign visitors - hot broth, sweet crab, and a familiar bowl of noodles with Sokcho's seafood character.

Local Tip

Jangsu Live Fish is directly by Sokcho Beach on Cheonghohaean-gil. The dining room is on the second floor, so ask for a window table if you want the full beach view. It works well after Sokcho Beach, the Sokcho Eye, or a Seoraksan day, especially if your group wants seafood without going all the way to Daepo Port.

Seasonal Note

The core menu stays fairly stable across the year. Fish sushi is made with local catch, so it may not look as varied as a large sushi chain; that narrower range is part of the point. What changes most is the daily fish supply, not the shape of the menu.

For Travelers

Foreign visitors are still a smaller share of the room, but the patterns are clear. They tend to like red crab ramen, seafood stew, crab meat, and fish sushi. Some Korean guests can be sensitive to the deep red-crab aroma, but foreign guests often receive it simply as a rich seafood flavor. If ordering is difficult, the owner's son from the cafe upstairs can help in English.

Pro Tip
Come for the view, then order like a local: kim-chobap if you want the house signature, mulhoe for a cold Sokcho seafood meal, or red crab ramen if you want something hot and easy after the beach. For a table, the crab set bundles snow crab, sashimi, squid sundae, and mulhoe. English is limited, but the owner's son runs the upstairs cafe and can help by phone or in person.

How to order here

A simple flow for first-time visitors who want to order confidently.

Step 1

Start with the house specialty

If you are unsure, begin with Snow Crab Set A - for 2. Seafood-focused places usually do their best work with the freshest catch or most popular set.

Step 2

Confirm portion and pricing

Ask whether dishes are sized for one person or for sharing. If they sell market-price seafood, double-check the price before you commit.

Step 3

Round out the meal

Pair the main order with Red Crab Ramen or a lighter side so the table gets both a signature item and something easy to share.
